morocco - In morocco you will notice that each mosaic on the walls has at least one cracked/flawed tile in it. the moroccan people worship allah, and believe that only allah can create something that is "perfect," so every mosaic was purposely flawed.

united kingdom - in the uk, the series of connected shops become more modern as you go through them. the twinings tea shop has rough-hewn timbers inside with stone flooring and a thatch roof, and as you pass into each store both the inside and outside of the shop are from newer eras.

the american adventure - the pictures on the walls inside the american adventure pavilion were all painted by various disney artists. one picture in particular is an optical illusion. the picture hangs in the corner to the left as you first enter the rotunda. it is a picture of a B-17 bomber from back in world war II. in front of the picture is a grey strip of tiles on the floor. if you stand on the gray tiles and walk back and forth, the plane seems to swivel and follow you.

norway - the first building as you enter norway has a roof covered with real sod. horticulture workers get up on that roof and trim the grass with clippers since they don't have a goat to keep ontop as they would in Scandinavia.

pavilions for australia, russia, spain, venezuela, united arab emirates, and israel never made it past the planning phase. an equatorial africa pavilion was planned but was never built. it would have featured a large african presentation film hosted by alex haley. a small african themed refreshment stop is now in its place, known as the outpost. after disney's animal kingdom—an african-themed animal preserve and park—opened, any plans for an african pavilion were dropped.

i can't wait to get the book i was telling you about! i bet it's full of things like this. excited

Not only all of that, but there were things like in Japan, they had planned a roller coaster ride. Also, Germany was supposed to be waaaaaaaay bigger than it is now.

huhh, i'm gonna try and find more on those that you mention. i *love* this stuff! Smile

japan - the levels of the five-tiered pagoda represent the five elements from which buddhists believe all things in the universe are produced: earth, water, fire, wind and sky.

(got this from a member of another board) one of the songs being played at the japan pavilion was "master of puppets" by metallica. it wasn't metallica's version, but a version play on a japanese guitar. ..haha, pretty sweet if this is true, huh?

and on the rollercoaster you brought up in your last post: walk to the rear of japan, cross the bridge, through the doors into the fortress. this was intended to be an entrance into the roller-coaster ride mount fuji (similar to matterhorn mountain in disneyland). disney cancelled this ride due to funding. there was also a conflict of interest with a major disney sponser, kodak, who did not want a ride with the word "fuji" (their main competitor).

germany - at the courtyard in germany, if you look up towards the back there is a clock. if you are there around the hour, it will ring and a wooden german boy and girl will come out and twirl around.

france - be sure to find belle's library. If you're searching for belle and beast, you're almost sure to walk through, but even if you're not, browse the shops and you'll find yourself there as well. there are countless references to classic disney tales. shelves are lined with favorite stories, knickknacks like gargoyles from hunchback and the rose from beauty and the beast and some more obscure disney references also. there's also a beautiful stained glass window, just like the mosaics during the prologue of B&TB.

"disney cancelled this ride due to funding. there was also a conflict of interest with a major disney sponser, kodak, who did not want a ride with the word "fuji" (their main competitor)."

Also, to add on to this, there's a reason that our friend Figment is purple and not the original green color he was meant to be. The Imagineers originally wanted Figment to be green, not unlike Pete's Dragon Elliott, but because of Fuji's main color being green, Kodak again stepped in here and said no, so they turned him purple.

Also, along with the planned additions to Japan and Germany, there was an entire continent they were going to do, Africa. You can see in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NYRNe61-Ks (LOL, this video is ridiculous, glad Disney doesn't do cheesy things like that now) that Alex Haley, the author of Roots was instrumental in the planning of it and from what I understand, they were really far along in the development and funding or something was pulled and it ceased to be.

you know, i'm kind of glad they decided against any big rides for the world showcase. disney world seems to be so busy trying to attract the kids (though there's millions of adults too that are bonkers about the place, haha) that i'm sure a lot of adults feel themselves being left out. world showcase is unique, and holds a lot of history and culture. things children don't always have a high interest in.

if they crowd the countries with rollercoasters or thrill rides, i'm sure it would be fun, but it wouldn't be as special as it is now.

japan - in front of the japan pavilion is a red torii gate.

this gate is replica of the torii gate found in hiroshima bay at itsukushima.

The original was built around the 12th century AD and they are made of camphor wood. the one shown here was the 8th built on the site and was constructed in 1875. the roof is made of thatched japanese cypress bark. the entire structure is coated with vermilion lacquer.

The epcot version even has faux barnacles around the base to simulate the years of standing in the sea like the original.

..i'd say that's a bit more special than some rollercoaster ride. tongue

oh! and remember belle's library? tell me if you can scope out the hidden mickey:

oh you're good. Wink

france - the eiffel tower is only one-tenth the size of the original.

morocco - the king of morocco was so enthused about having his nation represented at epcot that he sent his own artisans over to create carvings and tilework.

*looking for pork? keep walking.... the other white meat is a forbidden dish to tradtional muslims, and therefore is not served at the restaurants in morocco.

(lol, i have a funny but eye-rolling story about this dealing with my dad. he's had all these infidel bumper stickers and t-shirts made just to get at the people he works with over there since they're all muslim. well he ordered a t-shirt online before he came home this last time. it has a pig on the front, and on big black letters on the back it says "INFIDELS. WE DINE ON SWINE." ... rolling eyes haha.)

italy - one of the statues on top of the columns at the square's entrance shows Theodore and the Dragon. The other statue is of the Lion of St Mark, protector of the city of Venice.

*because actually using marble in the construction of italy's palace at epcot was almost impossible, imagineers used fiberglass disguised to look like the real thing. also, most of the statues are hollow. however, almost every other detail is authentic, right down to the genuine gold-covered angel sculpture on top of the bell tower.

and just imagine how many people go on not knowing, or even caring about all the details. the people at disney go that extra mile just to have the stories to tell when someone asks.

Yeah, on Lou's show this week the waitress told the story of Mama Melrose. She said most people don't ask but all the cast members know it for people that do.

not sure if this is completely true, someone on the disboards said so but who knows? i dont know

but supposedly, (because of it's height and no way to block it out) the tower of terror was painted the same color as the buildings in morocco so that it would blend in.

That's very possible, especially considering the building that the Tower of Terror is based on, the Hollywood Tower, is white.
