PostSubject: The Official D23 Expo Thread   August 31st 2009, 02:55

So the D23 Expo is coming up soon, Sept 10th-13th and I hope this becomes an annual event so I can maybe make it next year. Anyway, lots of rumors going about, everything from them showing park plans (Star Tours 2.0 is supposed to be a for sure thing), announcing and showing off movies, the Wall-E animatronic is supposed to make an appearance ect., so I'll be using this thread to find any piece of info I can find on it.

can we watch it on tv or anything? -- i hope i'm understanding it all, haha. they mentioned abc so i figured it might be but they also said something like exclusively to d23 members or something.

Yeah, I think I heard something like this will definitely be an annual event.

Sadly, as far as I know this won't be televised at all, though I'm sure we'll see some clips here and there.

You can however download the official guidebook.

Okay, so this should be a fairly big post, going to put together a list of everything that's been announced for D23, for days 1-3 (that I find interesting at least haha). There should be a little more news coming today, but I imagine the major stuff has already been announced.

First, a couple pics:

Night before the Expo

Opening day with Mickey at the Expo

Bob Iger opening the Expo

Cruise Ship News

Quote :
Disney Cruise Line President Karl Holz and Donald Duck reveal plans on Sept. 11, 2009 in Anaheim, Calif. for the Disney Wonder cruise ship to sail to Alaska in 2011. This is the first time a Disney cruise ship will call the West Coast home for an entire year. During 2011, the ship will depart Vancouver, B.C. for Alaska and sail seven-night Mexican Riviera cruises from the Port of Los Angeles

Movie News

The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever

Written & Directed by Jason Segel, the star and writer of Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

/film wrote:
Segel has said that his story follows the Muppets, who must unite to save the Muppet Theater from an evil oil tycoon. As it turns out, the old theater its on top of some black gold.

Double Dare You

So this will be a series of animated films all Produced, some Directed, some written all by Guillermo Del Toro.

Quote :
Anaheim, California — September 11, 2009 — The Walt Disney Studios, in collaboration with acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth,” “The Hobbit”), is launching a new production label called Disney Double Dare You, to create new animated films full of chills and thrills for audiences of all ages, it was announced today at the D23 Expo by Dick Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. All films will be produced under the guidance of del Toro, who originated the concept and the design of DDY and who will also direct certain projects. The first project in development for the new label is called “Trollhunters,” an original del Toro story which he will produce.

Commenting on the announcement, Cook said, “Guillermo is a brilliant and visionary filmmaker, and we’re excited to be launching this new label with him. His knowledge and appreciation for Disney films, along with his penchant for creating worlds of fantasy, presented a great opportunity for us to explore a whole new genre of filmmaking for moviegoers of all ages. We have admired Guillermo’s imaginative approach to filmmaking for some time, and now we’re proud to be working with him to create films full of imaginative delights and lots of thrills at the same time.”

Del Toro added, “As a director, I love to take audiences into fantastic new worlds and provide them with some anxious moments in the process. It is part of the Disney canon to create thrilling, unforgettable moments and villains in all their classic films. It is my privilege for DDY to continue in this tradition. To partner up with The Walt Disney Studios, with the support of Dick Cook and John Lasseter, is to belong to a storytelling partnership that I admire deeply. It is a true honor. I look forward to coming up with fresh and original stories that will take Disney films in a whole new direction. The emphasis is on fun, and we have some great ideas already on the storyboards.”

Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth received six Academy Award®️ nominations in 2007, including one for his original screenplay, and went on to win three awards. That film also received a BAFTA Award for Best Film not in the English language. His other directing credits include “Hellboy,” “Hellboy II: The Golden Army,” “The Devil’s Backbone,” “Cronos,” and “Mimic,” among others. Del Toro is currently directing back-to-back feature film adaptations of the Tolkien classic, “The Hobbit,” for release in 2011 and 2012.

Variety wrote:
First pic will be "Trollhunters," based on an original story from the helmer. The pics will all be tied together by "one feature that shall remain secret, but that you shall soon be very familiar with," del Toro said in a video that was played at the Mouse's first D23 fan confab in Anaheim on Friday.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

No real deets available, other than Johnny Depp will be back as Jack Sparrow. No director, writer announced. /film speculated it's possible Gore Verbinski returns now that he's not doing Bioshock, but I personally would be surprised given how unhappy he was with the productions of Dead Men's Chest & At World's End.

Yellow Submarine 3D

Directed by Robert Zemeckis (upcoming A Christmas Carol, Beowulf, Forrest Gump, Back to the Future)

Quote :
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The classic staple, Dumbo, is also getting a facelift–a second set of ride vehicles, and a three ring circus atmosphere and a three ring circus atmosphere to incorporate the feel of the original film. The ride will be completely queue-less with a waiting area set up with bleachers for parents. Riders waiting until their feather is called can be entertained by playing a variety of interactive games.

Also, Star Tours is finally getting upgraded.

My thoughts on everything.

Wall-E - They need to get Wall-E into the theme parks ASAP.

Alaskan Cruise - We needs to get on one of those voyages.

The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever - So happy to see Disney doing something big with the Muppets again. It's been such a long time that they've done anything substantial with them. I've been excited for awhile about Jason Segel being the one doing the project, all news points to this being pretty great.

Double Dare You - This had actually been a rumor, everyone knew GdT was involved with a "Project D", it's just that no one guessed it had to do with Disney. So excited about this news though, like I was saying, I imagine this is how he's going to crank out all those projects he's been rumored with forever. Disney is amassing a great amount of talent with Pixar, Marvel, GdT ect.,

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Up in the air really. The first trilogy was a bit of diminishing returns, though I really like the last two movies but they don't touch the first. Will have to see who else is involved.

Yellow Submarine - Eh. haha you just im'd me saying how awesome this is. This is another wait and see for me. I'd heard that this was announced, but I actually assumed they were just taking the old film and putting 3D enhancements to it. The fact this is a new film ala Orient Express, Beowulf and A Christmas Carol, really makes this a wait and see for me.

Fantasyland Refurb - Again, as long as they leave the classic attractions alone, I'm 90% on board. Just speculating though, if not I'm pretty against this, I don't like the complete shift of making Fantasyland girl centric, the Pixie thing is a little perplexing, because while I realize they're hot now, will they be by the time it even shows up (supposedly 2013)? I think they would have been better suited to throw more Princesses in there. I also don't like the idea of moving Mickey and Minnie's house towards the front of the park, if they're thinking of Main Street USA. IF they leave the classic attractions alone, I still have the reservations about moving Mickey & Minnie and Pixie Hollow, but the rest of it sounds pretty amazing. The Little Mermaid ride will be awesome I bet, the Beauty and the Beast stuff sounds fantastic and the Dumbo queue sounds like it could revolutionize queues.

Star Tours II - Eh. haha, I don't care either way for Star Wars, though the ride does need TLC. I'm not a fan of the newer Star Wars trilogy, only liked the last film so seeing Podracing, one of the more annoying things about the newer trilogy, makes me completely uninterested in this.

So, turns out I was right. Not much that we didn't know. One cool thing is MuppetVision at the Studios will be redone with Digital 3D and a more updated queue.
